What Is Gang Run Printing?

Gang run printing, sometimes just called "ganging," means arranging multiple unrelated print jobs on the same physical press sheet instead of running each job on its own dedicated sheet. A single sheet might carry five different customers' business card designs side by side, each occupying its own slot in the imposed grid.

The technique is old and not specific to business cards. Business cards are a natural fit for ganging because individual orders are small relative to a press sheet. Cards, unlike large-format posters or full-bleed brochures, also tolerate a shared color pass reasonably well, since most designs use simple flat colors or moderate photography rather than brand-critical spot inks.

How Are Multiple Designs Arranged on One Sheet?

The imposition step is identical to a single-design layout: a grid of columns and rows is calculated from the sheet size, card size, bleed, and gap, exactly as covered in the imposition guide. The difference is which artwork fills each cell. Instead of one design repeating in every slot, the print shop's software assigns a block of slots to each customer's file.

What Does the Cost Math Actually Look Like?

The savings come from a fixed setup cost, the plate and makeready, being spread across more cards. The figures below are simplified example numbers, not real market prices, but the ratios they demonstrate hold in practice: setup cost is fixed per run, and per-sheet materials cost scales with quantity.

Assume a fixed setup cost of $150 per run (plate and makeready) and a running cost of $2 per press sheet (stock and ink), with a sheet yielding 25 cards. A single customer ordering 250 cards alone needs 10 sheets: $150 setup + (10 x $2) = $170 total, or $0.68 per card. If five customers instead share one run, each still wanting 250 cards, the sheet run must produce 50 sheets to supply everyone (5 cards per design per sheet x 50 sheets = 250 cards per design). Setup cost of $150 splits five ways to $30 per customer; running cost of 50 x $2 = $100 splits five ways to $20 per customer. Total per customer: $50 for 250 cards, or $0.20 per card.

The gap narrows as order size grows. At high enough quantities, the fixed setup cost becomes a small fraction of the total either way, and the price advantage of ganging shrinks. This is why gang run pricing is marketed hardest at small, short-run quantities, where setup cost dominates the total.

When Does Gang Running Stop Paying Off?

Using the same illustrative figures, a solo order of 2,500 cards needs 100 sheets: $150 setup + (100 x $2) = $350, or $0.14 per card. That is already close to the $0.20 per-card figure from the 250-card gang run example above, and it beats it outright. Past a certain volume, a dedicated solo run amortizes its own setup cost well enough that sharing a sheet with other customers stops being the cheaper path.

The crossover point depends on the exact setup cost and running cost a shop uses internally, which this article does not claim to know for any real vendor. The pattern that generalizes is directional: gang running helps most at low quantities, where a fixed setup cost would otherwise dominate a small order, and it helps least once an order is large enough to justify its own dedicated press run.

What Do You Trade Away When You Gang Run?

Ganging is not a free lunch. Every design sharing a sheet must accept the same paper stock, weight, and finish, since they're printed on one physical sheet in one pass. If your job needs an uncommon stock, it cannot join a gang run built around a different one.

Color is the second compromise. A ganged sheet runs under one shared color profile and one set of ink key settings, tuned to look acceptable across every design on the sheet rather than calibrated precisely to any single job. Brand-critical spot colors or exact Pantone matches are usually better served by a dedicated run where the press can be set up for that job alone.

Finally, turnaround is fixed by the group, not by you. A gang run ships once the sheet is full and scheduled, so a shop may hold your job briefly waiting for enough other orders to fill the remaining slots, compared to a dedicated run that starts as soon as your file is ready.

File preparation also gets less forgiving. Because every design on the sheet is trimmed at the same cutter pass, a design with an off-register trim box, a missing bleed, or an unusually thin border can look worse relative to its neighbors on the same sheet than it would in isolation. Getting the trim box, bleed, and safe zone right before submission matters more in a gang run than in a solo one, since there is no second look at your file alone before the sheet goes to press.
